On October 21, Sesame Street will launch Sesame Street and Autism: See Amazing in All Children, an initiative that will disseminate positive and affirming portrayals of children with autism in order to promote awareness and understanding. The audience for this campaign are families with children ages 2 to 5 and their communities. Dr. Sandra Magaña, Professor at the UIC Department of Disability and Human Development, was one of 11 participants on the advisory committee for See Amazing in All Children. Dr. Magaña’s research involves Latino families and she was asked to participate to ensure that their perspectives were included.
See Amazing in All Children is rolling out a new storybook, We’re Amazing, 1, 2, 3!. It will feature Julia, a child with autism, who together with Elmo and Abby learn how to play, appreciate each other’s differences and help build understanding around autism. The central message is every child is unique and every child is amazing! Other resources being launched are daily routine cards and an iPad app.
