The Centers for Medicare & Medicaid Services (CMS) has been engaged in transforming the nation’s health care delivery system to deliver better health outcomes. The CMS Quality Strategy (2015), which incorporated work to shift Medicare from fee-for-service provided to paying for better health outcomes, identified “strengthening person and family engagement as partners in care” as a major goal. To this end, CMS released the CMS Person and Family Engagement Strategy in December 2016.
A strategy of person and family engagement views patients and their families as collaborators and active partners in the health care team. When an individual feels their beliefs, desires and culture are considered in their care, they are more likely to follow their care plan. Families who are involved in their relatives’ care can also encourage them to comply with their care plan.
