On January 16, Spectrum Magazine published an article entitled,”How to help low-income children with autism.” The article featured Grupo Salto, a Chicago support group for Latino parents of children with autism and Matie Ovalle, the co-founder of Grupo Salto. Among the main points of the article:
- It is likely that low-income children and children of color are underdiagnosed for autism, which also implies they are not receiving needed services such as early intervention
- There are numerous barriers to obtaining an autism diagnosis, such as pediatrician bias, which often leads to misdiagnosis
- Children in rural communities are also underdiagnosed due in part to the difficultly accessing developmental clinics
The article also makes reference to studies that investigate these issues. Click here to read the article.
