Recently, the National Rehabilitation Information Center (NARIC) highlighted the work of PIs Sandy Magaña and Kristina López entitled, Parents Taking Action: A New Program to Empower Latinx Parents of Children with Autism Spectrum Disorders. This was an evaluation of an psycho-educational intervention tailored to Latinx parents of children with autism or social communication issues. The intervention study was conducted in Los Angeles County, California and Chicago/Cook County, Illinois. The latest article on the intervention, Parents Taking Action: Reducing disparities through a culturally informed intervention for Latinx parents of children with autism, focuses on the California arm of the study. The researchers found that parents enrolled in the intervention group on average improved knowledge of their rights and access to the community compared to parents in the control group. Parents in the intervention group also reported decreased autism symptoms.
